As far as TV shows go, this year was pretty average
Scenario
It follows Rupert Campbell-Black and Tony Baddingham as their long-standing rivalry comes to a head. Coincidentally, Aidan Turner had previously filmed at Chavenage House (The Priory in Rivals). The same filming location was also used to depict Trenwith House in the 2015 BBC TV adaptation of Poldark.
Rivals stand out as the absolute highlight
It is a multi-layered work that definitely deserves a sequel. Conceptually it is a soap opera, narratively a satire, and stylistically a period piece. A careful viewer will find in it a message that, for once, is not superficial or pushing political idealism, but seeks the truth.
Rivals is funny, smart, vulgar and funny
Not a single episode feels gratuitous, unnecessary, or forced; the story and characters build beautifully to an extraordinary climax. Text, scenes, texts and direction serve the entire ensemble. The soundtrack appeals to every 80s kid.
Acting is a pleasure to watch
The always excellent David Tennant shines as a humanized villain with Alex Hassell as the opposing force. Victoria Smurfit and Aidan Turner make a believable, well-matched broken couple. The audience witnessed the appearance of several new stars, and especially Bella Maclean will be a recognizable name in the future.
