Jean Reno shot scenes for the film, but was completely cut from the finished film
Scenario
A high-powered CEO risks her career and family when she begins a torrid affair with her much younger intern. I recently watched Babygirl and I have to say it’s one of the most unique and daring thrillers I’ve seen in a while.
First off, the visuals are stunning
Directed by Halina Reijn, the film dives deeply into the complexities of human desire and power dynamics, wrapped in an intense, almost suffocating atmosphere. Jasper Wolf’s cinematography captures the raw emotion of each scene, combining light and shadow to create an atmospheric, almost dreamlike world.
Nicole Kidman delivers a stunning performance, bringing a mix of sensitivity and cold calculation to her character
There’s a constant sense of tension, as if something explosive is always on the verge of happening, and the pacing keeps the viewer on the edge of their seats throughout. The supporting cast, while lesser-known, also does a great job of giving the story depth and unpredictability.
That said, Babygirl isn’t for everyone
Without giving too much away, the film’s exploration of psychological control and submission is both disturbing and mesmerizing. Its erotic elements are tastefully done, but some viewers may find them uncomfortable or controversial.
It’s unsettling, stylish, and will keep you thinking about it long after the credits have rolled
The plot is at times deliberately vague, forcing you to piece together character motivations, which I found intriguing but may frustrate others. Overall, if you enjoy psychological thrillers that don’t shy away from taboo subjects and push boundaries, Babygirl is definitely worth a watch.
