I was swept away by the romance and definitely watched this show
Scenario
An agnostic sex podcaster and a newly single rabbi fall in love; discover whether their relationship will survive their very different lives and meddling families. Originally titled “Shiksa,” which is also the last word spoken in the first episode.
I agree – the rabbi is hot
There was a lot of great writing, pacing, and acting; it was easy to fall in love. : ) However, I felt an annoying discomfort with the portrayal of Jewish culture.
Or the enormous wealth his first-generation immigrant parents have somehow amassed
Some of the inconsistencies were just annoyingly glaring, like the Hanukkah menorahs that kept popping up everywhere – his parents’ front porch – really? Some, however, were more off-putting, like the constant use of the term “shiksa,” which is really not a nice word.
Many times on the show, non-Jews are identified by their blond hair
If I were among the people who sincerely used that term to describe someone, I wouldn’t want to hang out with them anymore. Furthermore, the first time the word is used, it is cast with contempt at a stranger based solely on her appearance.
I would like to see this improved in Season 2!
As a blond Jewish woman, I am familiar with this kind of “but you don’t look Jewish” ignorance, but it does not come from the Jewish community. At best, these discordant elements felt under-explored; at worst, they seemed pandering and reliant on outdated racial stereotypes.
