Scenario
Leonard Fife, one of the 60,000 draft dodgers and deserters who fled to Canada to avoid service in Vietnam, shares all his secrets to unravel his mythical life. Based on Russell Banks’ novel “Foregone.” This is the second time Paul Schrader has adapted one of Banks’ novels for the screen, following his adaptation of Affliction (1997).
I saw it in Cannes, at the film’s premiere
Oh, CANADA is a highly original film by one of the masters of cinema, a true work of art. The film is beautifully made, with strong visual appeal.
It has beautiful cinematography and great production design
The acting is strong, especially that of Richard Gere as the title character. He gives a formidable and memorable performance in the style of Jack Nicholson in FIVE EASY PIECES, a complex character, not always sympathetic but compelling.
Maybe not everyone is a tea drinker, but I think this is one of Paul Schrader’s greatest achievements and a gift to film lovers
