Scenario
Art the Clown is set to wreak havoc on the unsuspecting residents of Miles County as they peacefully drift off to sleep on Christmas Eve. Director Damien Leone said several major studios have expressed interest in financing the film based on the unexpected success of Terrifier 2 (2022), even and without a full script, but he turned them all down because he is sure they would never let him shoot the opening scene himself, which he describes as "very controversial". Leone commented that the only reason he can be so uncompromising in his portrayal of horror and gore is because he finances his films independently, creates all the special effects himself to keep costs down and doesn’t have a major studio breathing down his neck to make the film more mainstream.. Mia mentions that it will soon be the 5th anniversary of the original massacre, but it happened on Halloween, and this movie taking place on Christmas 5 years later means that the anniversary only passed 2 months ago.. For the hounds, Damien Leone 2016 offers 'Terrifier' it was a damn good time. A violent splatter-fest that didn’t try to be anything but that, it followed Art the Clown on a murderous rampage on Halloween night. It’s a sequel, 2022’s ‘Terrifier 2,’' was an improvement in almost every way: bigger, funnier and bloodier. Both films received critical acclaim (from a certain kind of critic, that is) and did well at the box office.
Can 'Terrifier 3' satisfy your predecessors?
Self-financed, Leone’s first two 'Terrifier' the movies are creepy, creepy, grand guignol masterpieces. The third part of the franchise once again follows everyone’s favorite mute psychopath, Art the Clown. It’s Christmas time and, united with his newborn head (watch the second movie for any semblance of meaning) and resplendent in a Santa costume, Art goes on another killing spree. Meanwhile, Sienna Shaw – the heroine of ‘Terrifier 2’ – tries to move on with her life, after shaving with a devilish clown five years ago. Art, however, has other plans for Sienna.
Leone doesn’t care
'Terrifier 3' not an insightful film. It has no message, explores no themes, and carries no satirical weight. He’s not trying to make 'It Follows,' or 'Smile,' or 'Rosemary’s Baby.' He doesn’t want to make a horror film with depth and nuance. He wants to make a spectacle out of spraying; a celebration of blood, courage and gore. His goal is to outdo other horror directors by upping the ante when it comes to carnage, throwing everything including the kitchen sink and the plumber at viewers in an attempt to give them thrills and chills.
It is wilder, funnier and darker than its predecessors
It succeeds. Armed with a bigger budget than before, Leone crafts a brilliantly brutal festival of extremes that is a worthy addition to 'Terrifier' franchise. Over-the-top and overly gory, if you expect Leone to operate within the confines of what is traditionally called 'good taste,' bitter disappointment awaits you. He not only pushes boundaries, he beats them and breaks them, with an ax to the head and a screwdriver to the spleen. In addition, the scenes where there is no violence are generally nasty, lacking power or momentum.
